SCIoI investigates the principles of intelligence, shared by all forms of intelligence, no matter whether artificial or biological, whether robot, computer program, human, or animal. Furthermore, it addresses the question how can we apply these principles to create intelligent technology.

There are two components to the ethics project, “Ethics of Intelligence” and “Etami”.

Ethics of Intelligence (project 19 of the Cluster) aims to understand ethics at SCIoI specifically. There are two overarching objectives to project 19: 1) understanding and anticipating issues with the potential outcomes of research at SCIoI and 2) understanding processes and procedures that could aid towards beneficial outcomes. To achieve these goals, Ethics of Intelligence brings together researchers from sociology and philosophy. Together they apply philosophical and sociological methods such as conceptual analysis, philosophical discourse analysis, expert interviews, stakeholder workshops and vision assessment.

Etami (ethical and trustworthy artificial and machine intelligence) is a consortium, where various industry and academic partners such as Volkswagen Group, KU Leuven, Atos, Continental, and Zalando come together to discuss AI ethics and ultimately create a “guidebook for ethical AI.” This is done on various topics. For instance, some activities within the consortium focus on creating auditing procedures to ensure the development of ethical AI, whereas other activities look at ways to ensure ethically sound documentation practices to increase transparency within the machine learning community. Currently, TU Berlin/SCIoI is leading a project within etami that analyzes incidents with AI. The goal is to understand the context of such incidents by asking questions like, what happened?  Where did it occur? What can we learn from this?
