Young scientists must become independent in order to be able to implement long-term research plans. The three main forms of career systems (Chair System, Lecturer System, Tenure-track System) vary in the way and extent to which they provide independent research. The tenure-track system seems to offer the best combination of independent research and informed selection of researchers for permanent positions. However, comparative empirical studies on how academic job types and their embedding in certain research systems create such opportunities are still needed. The aim of the project is to identify mechanisms that guarantee the independence of research from young scientists in two disciplines (AMO Physics and Theoretical Chemistry) in four research systems (Germany, UK, France, USA).
