The project is part of the DFG-special research area 1265: „Re-Figuration von Räumen“ (01.01.2018-31.12.2021)
The projects aim is to investigate new forms of everyday spatial constitution under the conditions of the current cyber-physical fusion of material and virtual communication spaces. This fusion is the result of a new software generation of smartphone apps, which are called locative media. They combine site-related information from virtual spaces with the topographical spaces of face-to-face communication. For example, gaming apps expand the material space with virtual creatures and objects, or a mobile recommendation service displays a nearby restaurant and its menu in its app. The use of locative media means that places of social coexistence are no longer the same for everyone present, because the spatial constitution is now based also on additional digitally represented elements that can only be experienced by users of specific apps. Two effects which may be associated with the increasing dissemination and use of locative media in public space are controversially discussed in the literature: on the one hand, the emergence of inclusive meeting places, and on the other, the emergence of exclusive places of retreat. Our research project builds on this research desideratum and asks under which socio-technical conditions whether the emergence of new opportunities for inclusion or increased social exclusion is to be expected. Furthermore we ask which new relational arrangements for spaces can be observed physically-materially and socially in the use of locative media.
